Basic training course for DaVinci Resolve Colorists

 

This is a course aimed at Resolve colorists who have been working with the Resolve system. It teaches the student methods for taking your Resolve operation to the next level. The students will learn tips and tricks that will help you to making the most of your Resolve color grading system.

Course insturctor is Stuart Blake Jones.

The course last two days (extention possible) and will be tought on a Mac System with either a Tangent Device Panel or DaVinci Panel.

 

All students receive an ICA certification upon completion, with a Blackmagic Design endorsment.

INSTRUCTION TO RESOLVE

A complete demo of the system, looking at every area of the software and how it works with the control surface.

 

RESOLVE WORKFLOWS INCL. FILM,RED, AND OTHER DIGITAL FILES

Learn how to load and work with all the different flavours of material our clients may bring us. Importing and conforming both film and digital material.

 

CREATING YOUR OWN TIMELINE

You have the files but no EDL. How to make a small timeline of important shots that will enable you to showcase some “looks” to the director, at the start of your session.

 

THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO NODES

The node is the key to successful grading using Resolve. We will look at all 4 nodes work on the differences, their strengths and where and when to use each one.

 

WHO IS A COLORIST?

You are a working Colorist, but how do you take yourself to the next level?

 

THE RESOLVE TRIM LUT

How to make a “Trim LUT”, and why it is a great resource for both onset color correction and in the grading room.

 

MULTIPLE EDL CONFORM

How do we conform multiple EDLs, that share the same corrections. What happens when new VFX shots keep getting added to the timeline, or we have a totally new cut and a new EDL is supplied.

 

PARALLEL, LAYER AND KEY MIXER NODES

These nodes offer lots of flexibility. See how to combine them with the other Resolve nodes to aid and compliment the other nodes in the family. How to mix the corrections from one node to another. What are the differences?

 

ADVANCED SECONDARY KEYING

Keying is a very important part of what we do as Colorists. Learn the tricks on how to key in Resolve using either the HSL, RGB or Luminance keyers.

 

GRADING WORKSHOP

Students are assigned with a project that contains an offline and sample material. Their task is to conform the material based upon an EDL, color grade each shot and export the material as a finished project.

 

POWER WINDOWS

The Polygon and Power Curve windows explained. Don’t pass shots off to VFX, use the PCW to make pack shots really stand out.

 

VERSIONS

Sometimes we need to store alternate versions of a grade, even rendering them to their own labeled folder.

KEY FRAMING IN THE TIMELINE

 

Using the timeline to key frame and manipulate the image over a period of time. How to change just the node you are working on.

 

LOOKS AND STYLES WITH RESOLVE

How to create looks and styles within Resolve that will help give you an edge over your competition.

 

IMPORTING AND EXPORTING

The grade is finished but how do you render a small section so you can e-mail it to the director? Importing the DPs “temp look” j-pegs or exporting a number of stills for your clients to view.
